Lamar HS to Change Mascot

HISD moving to retire outdated mascots. Superintendent Terry Grier is confident that by the end of this week, Houston ISD will have a new policy that corrects a longstanding wrong – the use of outdated  mascots at four schools.

He’s asking trustees at their meeting Thursday to approve a change in policy that would “respect cultural differences, values, and attitudes” by placing a ban on mascots or nicknames that use race or ethnicity. This would retire the Lamar HS Redskins, Westbury HS Rebels, Hamilton MS Indians, and Welch MS Warriors mascots and all related labels and imagery by the end of the school year.

The district is providing assistance to principals at those schools to deal with their communities to honor the traditions of the old mascots while having new ones in place in time for the opening of school next August.

Shouldn’t Terry be more focused on not hiring sexual predator teachers, overall teacher performance, and making sure kids can read/write and understand math before they graduate?

I really hate the PC Nazi’s, but the real irony of this is that Lamar hated all Indians. It was under his administration and leadership of the Rangers that the most violent and ruthless attempts to exterminate them were conducted. He would have hated to have the sports team of a school named for him called the Redskins. I am sure though he would have approved the Rangers. I bet HISD and the PC folks would too. Perhaps with the name change Lamar will stop spinning his grave.

How about naming them the Lamar Lambs. After this cave-in, Rangers (of all kinds) will be offended.

I am an old Lamar grad and think the whole name change idea is stupid. However, the violence that happens in schools these days, without any reason, calls for unusual actions to hopefully prevent these horrible and insane events. However, focusing on controversy where there is none may fan a flame, so to speak. I doubt that many of the targeted students were even aware they should be offended. Their grandparents my be bothered but not today’s students.
