I’ll also add that the public humiliation aspect is unfortunate, but I don’t know how you get around that since all police reports, arrests, etc. are public record. Maybe the WUPD could have investigated, presented him with the evidence and given him the opportunity to resign instead of arresting him. I’m sure they had their reasons for doing it the way they did though.

I think it’s pretty lenient actually. Law enforcement officers should be held to a higher standard in their personal conduct. I’m in the finance (money management) business and if I run up a bunch of credit card debt, default on loans, etc. then my employer will fire me. He is very up front about this – if I can’t manage my own personal finances then how can anybody credibly trust me to manage theirs? Same for police officers – if he breaks the law in his personal time, how can I credibly trust him to carry out his duties as a police officer?

At the same time I do feel bad for the officer’s difficult personal circumstances. But, that doesn’t excuse him from committing criminal activity.

Given the officer’s tenure with the department, demoting him is excessive. Human beings are emotional . Perhaps coming to the conclusion of a long marriage and with no one to give him comfort, direction, and support, anyone could go off in a ditch. I think his public humiliation is punishment enough.

I said it at the Public Forum and will say it again, why doesn’t the West U Police ticket and tow illegally parked cars? It is very simple. Safety and mobility would both increase if they just did their jobs. Once word got out I think you would see people changing their behaivour.

Here is another idea. Let’s paint the curbs yellow where no parking is allowed by stop signs and intersections. Maybe this visual clue will help.

I agree that the community needs to be more involved. However, it is not an issue of enforcing “more stringently.” It is an issue of enforcing any parking laws. Everyday, we all drive by at least 10 cars that are illegally parked. You may not be inconvienenced by these cars, you may even park some of these cars yourself. What is the logic behind adding more laws and rules, when we don’t even enforce the ones we have? Janine, I encourage you to read the postings on the west u site and watch the video’s of the meetings – enforcing the current laws is clearly more of an issue that you, this news site, and council make it out to be. None of these comments represent the community sentiment as a whole. There are various camps, I am just pointing out to everyone that there is an option to do no legislation and just enforce the laws on the books. Sometimes the best action is no action at all.

It’s the 14,000 or so residents that are asleep to this issue that is most concerning. The handful of comments that said to enforce existing laws more stringently do not represent the community sentiment as a whole.

Thanks, I overlooked that line! Anyway it sounds like we’re getting hosed as a city on this METRO deal. We should withdraw from METRO and keep the money in West U. The city could cut property taxes by half a million, and still nearly double the mobility funds at their disposal.

Three WUPD cruisers ripped down Academy southbound about 2:05 this afternoon like somebody was robbing a donut shop. Didn’t stop at stop signs or anything, and the third one had lights going but no siren.

I don’t get why we are bothering with a survey. Just do a few workshops like the parking meetings. They do, after all, share the same agenda: reducing parked cars so that trash trucks can use automated arms. With out all the parking hype, there is no way council and recycling board can push through larger “carts” to litter our streets.

You think parking is bad now, just wait till your neighbor’s “cart” gets hit, knocked over, and set to rest in front of your drive way. Oh, and you think parked cars are unsightly? How about trash buckets in peoples front yards.

I hope they call me. I really hope they call me.
