“WUES101” Eases Back-to-School Confusion

West University Elementary is hosting three events on Thursday, Aug. 23 to help incoming students and parents make an easier transition into the academic year.

Held in the school’s multi-purpose room (MPR) from 1-2 p.m., WUES101 is an informal gathering for parents new to the school and for those of incoming Kindergartners.

Meet your PTO leaders and learn things such as what a “sociable” is, how ancillaries work, and how to navigate the carpool lane. While parents get to know the ins and outs of the school and its PTO, kindergartners will enjoy icebreaker activities with their new classmates in the adjoining cafeteria. Families should enter the building via the Goode St. entrance. For the first time, parents and students of any grade level who are new to the school are invited to attend WUES101. While kindergartners will break out into their individual classroom, new students in grades 1-5 will socialize in one larger group.

Immediately following WUES101 is a kindergarten meet-and-greet. What better way to ease a kindergartner’s—or a kindergartner’s parents’—first-day-of-school jitters than to meet the teacher ahead of time? Visit your child’s classroom, talk to the teacher and meet other parents.

Finally, the annual Red Apple sale takes place in the MPR from 3-5 p.m. New parents are encouraged to come during the first hour to take advantage of all that the PTO has to offer. You can join the PTO, pre-purchase carnival tickets, sign up for the Birthday Book Club and much more. This is an ideal time to ask questions, and one of the only opportunities to use your credit card to pay for transactions. Bring your calendar and get ready for a great school year.

Can’t make it to the sale? This is the first year that you can order online. Items can be picked up in the MPR on the 23rd, or on the first day of school.

If you haven’t yet ordered your school supplies, check the PTO website (westupto.org) for a school supply list. Though not listed, fourth and fifth graders need a 3-inch zipper binder/organizer. Office Max still has plenty in stock, and don’t forget to buy the $2.99 warranty—with so much learning going on, the cases wear out fast.
