Mayor Endorses Republican Sarah Davis For State Rep.

Because she espouses the same conservative ideals that he believes in, West University Place Mayor Bob Kelly said he is endorsing Republican candidate Sarah Davis to represent West U. in the Texas Legislature.

Davis, a personal injury defense attorney, is running against Bonnie Parker, a former school teacher, to earn the Republican nomination for State Representative for District 134, which covers West U., Bellaire and surrounding areas. Whomever wins in the March 2 primary will face off against incumbent Democratic Rep. Ellen Cohen.

Kelly said he met for coffee with Davis after learning she filed for the Republican nomination. He said he wanted to learn about her thoughts and feelings on issues that would impact West U. and the state.

“We sort of saw eye to eye on the issues,” Kelly said. “She’s young, she’s very energetic, she’s very focused. Very intelligent. I think she makes just a very good representative for this area with all those attributes.”

He said he agrees with Davis’ stance on stopping what he views as “unfunded government mandates” coming from the federal government into Texas.

“I just feel more comfortable with a Republican representing our area to try to stop that tide,” Kelly said. “I just really think we need to start at the local level and rebel against what’s sogging on in Washington.”

Davis has lived in West U. for two years with her fiance Kent Adams, who now serves as her campaign treasurer. She works as an attorney at Lewis, Brisbois, Bisgaard and Smith LLP, where she defends individuals and companies when they are sued in civil courts.

As a breast cancer survivor, Davis said previously that one of the main reasons she chose to seek the Republican nomination is because she is apprehensive that health care reform will lead to government-run options that bring high costs and lower quality. She said she believes in the ideals of fiscal conservatism, making government smaller and cutting big spending.

“I think it’s a huge success for our campaign … I feel that people really trust their local leaders,” Davis said about Kelly’s endorsement. “With the local leadership endorsing me, I think they are sending a message to the people in the district that I would be the right candidate to challenge Ellen Cohen in the general election.”

Davis has also been endorsed by Bellaire Mayor Cindy Siegel, former District 134 Rep. Martha Wong, United Republicans of Harris County, Texas Conservative Review, and The “C” Club.
